Ditch the Drift
A single-page book sales funnel built to convert visitors into readers — parallax hero with 3D book mockup, custom reviews carousel, three-tier pricing, and Mailchimp lead capture, all in under 60KB with zero external libraries.
The Story
"Ditch the Drift" is a 300-page personal development book born from my own catastrophic collapse and hard-won rebuild. After 15 years as a deputy sheriff — including an Officer of the Year award — I lost everything to addiction and arrest. The book walks readers through how drift silently destroys lives, how to recognize it, and a 10-rule framework for building an intentional, purpose-driven life.
The website needed to do one thing better than anything else: convert visitors into readers. Not entertain them. Not impress them with design tricks. Convert them. That meant either buying the book on Amazon or signing up for five free chapters via email. Every design decision, every word of copy, every section on the page exists to move someone closer to one of those two actions.
A book sales funnel is a different animal than a typical business website. There's no services page, no about company page, no blog. It's a single page with a single purpose — and the constraint of that simplicity is what makes the design decisions so critical. Every section has to earn its place.
The Process
The architecture follows a proven sales funnel structure, and every section answers the next objection in a visitor's mind. The hero hooks with the book's core promise. The features section spells out what the reader will gain. The story section establishes credibility through raw personal narrative. The author section builds trust. The reviews carousel provides social proof. The pricing cards present the offer. And the email signup catches everyone who isn't ready to buy yet — giving them five free chapters and keeping them in the funnel.
The color palette was pulled directly from the book's physical cover design — warm beige cream that feels like holding a book page, dark bronze accents for authority, and deep charcoal for contrast. The deliberate avoidance of aggressive reds and blues separates this from typical sales pages. The book's message is grounded wisdom, not hype, and the design needed to reflect that.
The hero section uses a parallax background with hourglass and compass imagery — visual metaphors for the book's central tension between drifting through time and navigating with intention. A three-column CSS Grid places the headline in oversized Playfair Display on the left, a 3D book mockup in the center (clickable, linking directly to the order section), and lets the parallax imagery fill the right third. The tagline — "Decision Over Default. Every Single Day." — is pulled directly from the book's core framework.
The reviews carousel is custom-built from scratch — no Swiper, no Slick, no libraries. Auto-rotation every five seconds, touch and swipe support on mobile, dot pagination, prev/next controls, and it pauses on hover to respect reader engagement. Three cards on desktop, two on tablet, one on mobile. All reviews include full names, professions, and five-star ratings.
The pricing section features a three-tier card layout with the Paperback edition visually highlighted as "Most Popular" — bronze border accent, subtle lift — because paperback is the highest-margin product. Kindle is the accessible entry point at $7.99. The Audiobook card teases "Coming Soon" with a "Notify Me" action to capture future demand before the product even exists.
The Mailchimp integration uses a custom JSONP submission handler that bypasses Mailchimp's default redirect behavior, keeping visitors on the page. Success and error messages display inline and auto-hide after five seconds. The offer — five free chapters — gives real value before asking for a purchase, which is the difference between a lead magnet that converts and one that gets ignored.

The Solution
The final deliverable is a single-page, hand-coded book sales funnel that weighs under 60KB total — no external JavaScript libraries, no framework overhead, no CMS. The page follows a proven conversion architecture: Hook, Promise, Credibility, Trust, Social Proof, Offer, Lead Capture. Every section earns its position by answering the next objection in the visitor's mind.
The parallax hero with 3D book mockup creates an immediate emotional impression that separates this from commodity book landing pages. The custom reviews carousel — built without Swiper or Slick — handles auto-play, touch gestures, dot pagination, and responsive card counts across breakpoints. The three-tier pricing layout strategically highlights the paperback as the featured product while the "Coming Soon" audiobook card captures future demand before the product exists.
The Mailchimp integration keeps everything on-page with a custom JSONP handler — no redirects, no page reloads, inline feedback. The email offer of five free chapters converts visitors who aren't ready to purchase into warm leads who are. Google Analytics event tracking captures signups, purchase clicks, and social interactions for ongoing funnel optimization.
Schema.org Book structured data, full Open Graph and Twitter Card meta tags, and semantic HTML ensure the site performs in search and social sharing. Performance is optimized with requestAnimationFrame-throttled parallax, IntersectionObserver-driven animations, lazy-loaded images, GPU-accelerated CSS transforms, and preconnected font CDNs. The entire site ships fast, converts well, and represents exactly what a focused, single-purpose sales page should be.
